FOR ALL OF YOU OVERTHINKERS CHECK OUT THIS STORY

A boy and a horse were once in the woods. The boy says to the horse, “I can’t see my way forward.”

The Horse: Can you see your next step?

The Boy: Yes.

The Horse: Then take that step.

After taking that one step, the boy looks at the horse and says: Now what?

The horse: Can you see another step?

The boy: Yes.

The horse: Then take that.

The boy kept asking and the horse kept telling him to take only one step that he can see in front of him.

While embarking on any journey in life, our mind rushes to jump to the conclusions right away.

Always remember: A thousand miles journey starts with a single step.

With each step taken, you get nearer to your goal. Only think of the next step. That’s how you live because

Jill Dando

Jill Dando, an accomplished English journalist who gained widespread recognition for her role as a co-presenter on the BBC One unsolved crimes show Crimewatch, tragically met her untimely demise when she was fatally shot outside her London residence in 1999. The shocking incident sparked an extensive investigation that led to the conviction and imprisonment of a local man; however, after spending eight years behind bars, he was eventually acquitted. Two decades after the tragic event that claimed her life, the BBC paid tribute to Dando's memory by releasing a compelling documentary titled The Murder of Jill Dando. Despite the passage of time and the thorough inquiry, the case surrounding her death continues to baffle investigators, remaining unresolved to this day, leaving a lingering sense of mystery and loss in its wake.

KEYS TO POWER

 KEYS TO POWER

Everyone has insecurities. When you show yourself in the world and

display your talents, you naturally stir up all kinds of resentment, envy, and

other manifestations of insecurity. This is to be expected. You cannot spend

your life worrying about the petty feelings of others. With those above you,

however, you must take a different approach: When it comes to power,

outshining the master is perhaps the worst mistake of all.

Do not fool yourself into thinking that life has changed much since the

days of Louis XIV and the Medicis. Those who attain high standing in life

are like kings and queens: They want to feel secure in their positions, and

superior to those around them in intelligence, wit, and charm. It is a deadly

but common misperception to believe that by displaying and vaunting your

gifts and talents, you are winning the master’s affection. He may feign

appreciation, but at his first opportunity he will replace you with someone

less intelligent, less attractive, less threatening, just as Louis XIV replaced

the sparkling Fouquet with the bland Colbert. And as with Louis, he will

not admit the truth, but will find an excuse to rid himself of your presence.

This Law involves two rules that you must realize. First, you can

inadvertently outshine a master simply by being yourself. There are masters

who are more insecure than others, monstrously insecure; you may

naturally outshine them by your charm and grace. No one had more natural talents than Astorre Manfredi, prince of Faenza.

The most handsome of all the young princes of Italy, he captivated his

subjects with his generosity and open spirit.

In the year 1500, Cesare Borgia laid siege to Faenza. When the city

surrendered, the citizens expected the worst from the cruel Borgia, who,

however, decided to spare the town: He simply occupied its fortress,

executed none of its citizens, and allowed Prince Manfredi, eighteen at the

time, to remain with his court, in complete freedom.

A few weeks later, though, soldiers hauled Astorre Manfredi away to a

Roman prison. A year after that, his body was fished out of the River Tiber,

a stone tied around his neck. Borgia justified the horrible deed with some

sort of trumped-up charge of treason and conspiracy, but the real problem

was that he was notoriously vain and insecure. The young man was

outshining him without even trying. Given Manfredi’s natural talents, the

prince’s mere presence made Borgia seem less attractive and charismatic.

The lesson is simple: If you cannot help being charming and superior, you

must learn to avoid such monsters of vanity. Either that, or find a way to

mute your good qualities when in the company of a Cesare Borgia.

Second, never imagine that because the master loves you, you can do

anything you want. Entire books could be written about favorites who fell

out of favor by taking their status for granted, for daring to outshine. In late-

sixteenth-century Japan, the favorite of Emperor Hideyoshi was a man

called Sen no Rikyu. The premier artist of the tea ceremony, which had

become an obsession with the nobility, he was one of Hideyoshi’s most

trusted advisers, had his own apartment in the palace, and was honored

throughout Japan. Yet in 1591, Hideyoshi had him arrested and sentenced to

death. Rikyu took his own life, instead. The cause for his sudden change of

fortune was discovered later: It seems that Rikyu, former peasant and later

court favorite, had had a wooden statue made of himself wearing sandals (a

sign of nobility) and posing loftily. He had had this statue placed in the

most important temple inside the palace gates, in clear sight of the royalty

who often would pass by. To Hideyoshi this signified that Rikyu had no

sense of limits. Presuming that he had the same rights as those of the

highest nobility, he had forgotten that his position depended on the emperor,

and had come to believe that he had earned it on his own. This was an

unforgivable miscalculation of his own importance and he paid for it withhis life. Remember the following: Never take your position for granted and

never let any favors you receive go to your head.

Knowing the dangers of outshining your master, you can turn this Law to

your advantage. First you must flatter and puff up your master. Overt

flattery can be effective but has its limits; it is too direct and obvious, and

looks bad to other courtiers. Discreet flattery is much more powerful. If you

are more intelligent than your master, for example, seem the opposite: Make

him appear more intelligent than you. Act naive. Make it seem that you

need his expertise. Commit harmless mistakes that will not hurt you in the

long run but will give you the chance to ask for his help. Masters adore

such requests. A master who cannot bestow on you the gifts of his

experience may direct rancor and ill will at you instead.

If your ideas are more creative than your master’s, ascribe them to him,

in as public a manner as possible. Make it clear that your advice is merely

an echo of his advice.

If you surpass your master in wit, it is okay to play the role of the court

jester, but do not make him appear cold and surly by comparison. Tone

down your humor if necessary, and find ways to make him seem the

dispenser of amusement and good cheer. If you are naturally more sociable

and generous than your master, be careful not to be the cloud that blocks his

radiance from others. He must appear as the sun around which everyone

revolves, radiating power and brilliance, the center of attention. If you are

thrust into the position of entertaining him, a display of your limited means

may win you his sympathy. Any attempt to impress him with your grace

and generosity can prove fatal: Learn from Fouquet or pay the price.

In all of these cases it is not a weakness to disguise your strengths if in

the end they lead to power. By letting others outshine you, you remain in

control, instead of being a victim of their insecurity. This will all come in

handy the day you decide to rise above your inferior status. If, like Galileo,

you can make your master shine even more in the eyes of others, then you

are a godsend and you will be instantly promoted.

The Stars in the

Sky. There can be only

one sun at a time. Neverobscure the sunlight, or

rival the sun’s brilliance;

rather, fade into the sky and

find ways to heighten

the master star’s

intensity.

Authority: Avoid outshining the master. All superiority is odious, but the

superiority of a subject over his prince is not only stupid, it is fatal. This is a

lesson that the stars in the sky teach us—they may be related to the sun, and

just as brilliant, but they never appear in her company. (Baltasar Gracián,

1601-1658)

The High-Skilled Workers

The High-Skilled Workers

Brynjolfsson and McAfee call the group personified by Nate Silver the “high-skilled”workers. Advances such as robotics and voice recognition are automating many low-

skilled positions, but as these economists emphasize, “other technologies like data

visualization, analytics, high speed communications, and rapid prototyping have

augmented the contributions of more abstract and data-driven reasoning, increasing the

values of these jobs.” In other words, those with the oracular ability to work with and

tease valuable results out of increasingly complex machines will thrive. Tyler Cowen

summarizes this reality more bluntly: “The key question will be: are you good at

working with intelligent machines or not?”

Nate Silver, of course, with his comfort in feeding data into large databases, then

siphoning it out into his mysterious Monte Carlo simulations, is the epitome of the

high-skilled worker. Intelligent machines are not an obstacle to Silver’s success, but

instead provide its precondition.

Deep Work Is Valuable

 Deep Work Is Valuable

As Election Day loomed in 2012, traffic at the New York Times website spiked, as is

normal during moments of national importance. But this time, something was different.

A wildly disproportionate fraction of this traffic—more than 70 percent by some

reports—was visiting a single location in the sprawling domain. It wasn’t a front-page

breaking news story, and it wasn’t commentary from one of the paper’s Pulitzer Prize–

winning columnists; it was instead a blog run by a baseball stats geek turned election

forecaster named Nate Silver. Less than a year later, ESPN and ABC News lured

Silver away from the Times (which tried to retain him by promising a staff of up to a

dozen writers) in a major deal that would give Silver’s operation a role in everything

from sports to weather to network news segments to, improbably enough, Academy

Awards telecasts. Though there’s debate about the methodological rigor of Silver’s

hand-tuned models, there are few who deny that in 2012 this thirty-five-year-old data

whiz was a winner in our economy.

Another winner is David Heinemeier Hansson, a computer programming star who

created the Ruby on Rails website development framework, which currently provides

the foundation for some of the Web’s most popular destinations, including Twitter and

Hulu. Hansson is a partner in the influential development firm Basecamp (called

37signals until 2014). Hansson doesn’t talk publicly about the magnitude of his profit

share from Basecamp or his other revenue sources, but we can assume they’re

lucrative given that Hansson splits his time between Chicago, Malibu, and Marbella,

Spain, where he dabbles in high-performance race-car driving.

Our third and final example of a clear winner in our economy is John Doerr, a

general partner in the famed Silicon Valley venture capital fund Kleiner Perkins

Caufield & Byers. Doerr helped fund many of the key companies fueling the current

technological revolution, including Twitter, Google, Amazon, Netscape, and Sun

Microsystems. The return on these investments has been astronomical: Doerr’s net

worth, as of this writing, is more than $3 billion.

Why have Silver, Hansson, and Doerr done so well? There are two types of answersto this question. The first are micro in scope and focus on the personality traits and

tactics that helped drive this trio’s rise. The second type of answers are more macro

in that they focus less on the individuals and more on the type of work they represent.

Though both approaches to this core question are important, the macro answers will

prove most relevant to our discussion, as they better illuminate what our current

economy rewards.

To explore this macro perspective we turn to a pair of MIT economists, Erik

Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee, who in their influential 2011 book, Race Against

the Machine, provide a compelling case that among various forces at play, it’s the

rise of digital technology in particular that’s transforming our labor markets in

unexpected ways. “We are in the early throes of a Great Restructuring,” Brynjolfsson

and McAfee explain early in their book. “Our technologies are racing ahead but many

of our skills and organizations are lagging behind.” For many workers, this lag

predicts bad news. As intelligent machines improve, and the gap between machine and

human abilities shrinks, employers are becoming increasingly likely to hire “new

machines” instead of “new people.” And when only a human will do, improvements in

communications and collaboration technology are making remote work easier than

ever before, motivating companies to outsource key roles to stars—leaving the local

talent pool underemployed.

This reality is not, however, universally grim. As Brynjolfsson and McAfee

emphasize, this Great Restructuring is not driving down all jobs but is instead

dividing them. Though an increasing number of people will lose in this new economy

as their skill becomes automatable or easily outsourced, there are others who will not

only survive, but thrive—becoming more valued (and therefore more rewarded) than

before. Brynjolfsson and McAfee aren’t alone in proposing this bimodal trajectory for

the economy. In 2013, for example, the George Mason economist Tyler Cowen

published Average Is Over, a book that echoes this thesis of a digital division. But

what makes Brynjolfsson and McAfee’s analysis particularly useful is that they

proceed to identify three specific groups that will fall on the lucrative side of this

divide and reap a disproportionate amount of the benefits of the Intelligent Machine

Age. Not surprisingly, it’s to these three groups that Silver, Hansson, and Doerr

happen to belong. Let’s touch on each of these groups in turn to better understand why

they’re suddenly so valuable.
